BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company, is exploring for nickel deposits in four areas in the Philippines on top of its previously announced exploration activity in the country, a company official said.
In February, the company said it was conducting exploration activities in Pujada peninsula in southern Philippines, where nickel ore reserves have been estimated at 150 million metric tons at 1.3% nickel.
Philip Hopkins, group manager for regional development for BHP’s nickel division, said his company is quite bullish in developing nickel mines in the Philippines.
“The Philippines is a very exciting place to do business at this point. We’re acceler-ating the difficult processes of each phase of our studies,” Hopkins told reporters.
He didn’t give further details on the four new exploration areas.
In February, the Philippine government announced BHP would invest $1.5 billion in Philippine mining industry, including a nickel processing plant.
