BHP To Call It Quits In Suriname

CaribWorldNews, LONDON, England, Thurs. Oct. 30, 2008: BHP Billiton Ltd. Is set to pull out its 45 percent stake in the bauxite mining and alumina refining operationin Alcoa Inc. in Suriname. Dow Jones reports indicate the company will pull out by 2010, just weeksafter the Suriname government suspended discussions with BHP over thedevelopment of a new bauxite mine in the west of the country. `We confirm we will be exiting Suriname in 2010,` a BHP spokesman wasquoted as saying while adding that the decision wasn't related to marketconditions and the company remains committed to investment in its pipelineof growth projects. Alcoa and its partner Alumina Ltd. own 55 of the company.
