Australia's largest aluminium smelter, Boyne Smelters, south of Gladstone, says it has developed a plan to improve the level of pollution from its central Queensland site.

The Department of Environment and Resource Management says it ordered Boyne Smelters to implement a transitional environmental program after a fire at the plant last May.

The department says it wanted the plan to address concerns in the carbon bake section of the plant.

The smelter's general manager, Guy Fortin, says benzo(a)pyrene pollution emissions come from the carbon bake as part of the smelting process.

He says improvements are underway to improve the efficiency of the carbon bake.

Boyne Smelters is also required to provide monitoring data on the substance to the department quarterly.
