Australia, N.Z. Stocks: BHP, Coca-Cola, CSR, Emeco, Newcrest

Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 0.3 percent to 4,712.60 as of 10:24 a.m. in Sydney. New Zealand’s NZX 50 Index was little changed at 3,326.30 in Wellington.


The following were among the most active shares in the market today. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names.


Mining shares: Copper futures for March delivery fell 1.8 percent to close at $4.3295 a pound at 1:18 p.m. yesterday on the Comex in New York.


BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP AU), the world’s largest mining company, dropped 0.7 percent to A$44.84.


Rio Tinto Group (RIO AU), the world’s third-biggest mining company, lost 1.5 percent to A$84.73.


Oil producers: Oil for February delivery declined 2.1 percent to $88.38 a barrel yesterday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest settlement price since Dec. 17.


Woodside Petroleum Ltd. (WPL AU), Australia’s second- largest oil and gas producer, slipped 0.4 percent to A$42.80.


Gold producers: Gold fell for the third straight day in New York on mounting speculation that an improving U.S. economy will cut demand for the metal as a haven.


Newcrest Mining Ltd. (NCM AU), Australia’s largest gold producer, dropped 1 percent to A$39.01.


Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd. (CCL AU) rose 1.9 percent to A$11.17. Australia’s biggest soft-drink maker had its stock rating raised to “buy” from “hold” at Deutsche Bank AG and upgraded to “neutral” from “sell” at UBS AG.


Cochlear Ltd. (COH AU) dipped 0.5 percent to A$80.52. The maker of the world’s best-selling hearing implant was downgraded to “neutral” from “buy” by UBS analysts.


CSR Ltd. (CSR AU) rose 2.4 percent to A$1.69. The Australian building products and aluminum company reported a plan to return A$800 million ($795 million) in capital to shareholders.


Emeco Holdings Ltd. (EHL AU) climbed 1.9 percent to A$1.065. The supplier of earth-moving machinery had its stock rating raised to “outperform” from “neutral” by analysts at Credit Suisse Group AG.
