Cape Alumina says a planned bauxite mine at western Cape York in far north Queensland could create more than 1,000 jobs.

The company has completed a study of a potential site about 95 kilometres north of Weipa and will now go ahead with advanced exploration.

Spokesman Nev Conway says the project would give the region's economy a major boost.

"In terms of direct jobs, it's far too early to say the exact number, but there could be hundreds of jobs during the construction and operation phase," he said.

"In terms of indirect jobs, we would expect that to be well over 1,000."
