No further negotiating sessions are scheduled as workers continue a strike against Xstrata’s CCR copper refinery in Montreal-East, union and company representatives reported.

The strike began yesterday afternoon, and the two main issues are the pension plan and salary increases, said Denis Matteau, president of USW Local 6887.

The union’s Web site says 92% of workers voted against a company offer on June 1 and gave a strike mandate to the union’snegotiating committee. The collective bargaining agreement expired May 31.

The walkout involves roughly 430 workers. Matteau reported that employees are seeking a greater share of the company’s profits.

“We don’t want all of the profits,” he said.“We just want a better package.”

As of Tuesday morning, no further contract talks had been scheduled, said both Matteau and Louis-Philippe Gariepy, manager of corporate affairs for Xstrata Copper Canada.

“I think it’s going to be a long strike,” Matteau said.

Xstrata is continuing to operate the plant on a reduced basis, Gariepy said.
