Rio Tinto Alcan’s 20 pct held Sohar Aluminium smelter in Oman at full capacity

Rio Tinto PLC (ASX, LSE: RIO) unit Rio Tinto Alcan Inc said the Sohar Aluminium state-of-the-art smelter in the Sultanate of Oman has now reached full production. The plant has an initial production capacity of 360,000 tonnes per year. Rio Tinto Alcan holds a 20 percent stake in the venture, and local partners Oman Oil Company S.A.O.C. and the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority control 40 percent each. In addition to its equity interest in the Sohar Aluminium project, Rio Tinto Alcan assumes responsibility for technical and operational support as well as sales and marketing of all metal exported.
