US secondary producer Arkansas Aluminum Alloys has begun normal shipments of ingot production to its customers, with the first deliveries on March 19, after an October 31 explosion at the plant in Hot Springs.
"We are pleased to announce that Arkansas Aluminum Alloys is back in full production after the tragic and devastating incident of October 31, 2006," said President Richard Wolf.
According to Jerry Thornberry, vice president of operations, "We are still healing from the personal losses sustained in the accident, but we have rebuilt and have created a state-of-the-art casting center unparalleled in the North American secondary aluminium industry."
Arkansas Aluminum Alloys has recalled its laid off workforce. Most of these employees had been laid off since the first week of January.
Arkansas Aluminum, which produces A380, 319 and 356 secondary alloys, has been casting them as 1,200 lb sows. It has a capacity for 15 million to 15.5 million lb/month; of that total, 5 million to 6 million lb is sow production. The smelter bought a new pouring machine and ingot casting line.
The statement from the company did not say if the cause of the explosion, which claimed the lives of two workers, was known.
