The Gulf countries are set to impose a 33% antidumping tax on aluminum products imported from China from July 22 after the Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC, issued a final ruling in the case. TThe decision was made by GCC's Bureau of Technical Secretariat of Anti Injurious Practices in International Trade and follows a preliminary ruling made in December 2020, according to a June 24 report by China Trade Remedies Information under the Ministry of Commerce.

The tax will be levied for a period of five years and is aimed at plates, sheets and strips of aluminum alloys, of a thickness not exceeding 8 mm but greater than 0.2mm, except those polished, coated and heat treatable. Aluminum can stocks used for beverage cans and its lids also fall under the levy.
The GCC had said earlier that China's aluminum products imported into the Gulf market resulted in "material damage to the Gulf industry of similar products."
  Spate of trade disputes
China's exports of aluminum products are not expected to see any significant increase in the coming months, as increasing trade friction with other countries add to export challenges amid a recovery in overseas demand, sources told S&P Global Platts. An analyst with Tianfeng Futures echoed these sentiments, adding that China's 2021 aluminum exports may grow around 2% year on year.
China's exports of aluminum products reached 423,000 mt in April, up 1% from a year ago, but slightly changed from a month earlier, according to latest data from China's Nonferrous Metals Industry Association.
The GCC bureau had started antidumping investigations on China's aluminum products with HS codes of 76061200 and 76069200 from April 29, 2020.
The country's exports have attracted antidumping investigations or taxes from other markets as well.
On July 18, the European Commission made a preliminary ruling to levy 6 months' provisional antidumping tax of 16%-29.1% on aluminum converter foil imported from China.
In June, the UK's Trade Remedies Authority launched an antidumping investigation on aluminum extrusions imported from China.
