Germany's Trimet Aluminium AG restarted two aluminium furnaces at the Hamburg Aluminium Plant Wednesday.
Trimet bought the idled plant at the end of 2006 and began restarting furnaces in March, the company said.
The smelter was mothballed in the summer of 2005 because the previous owners Norsk Hydro ASA (NHY), Alcoa Inc. (AA) and Austria's Amag were unable to secure a competitive long-term electricity supply deal.
In total, 270 furnaces are to return to operation and the smelter will provide jobs for up to 400 people, Trimet said.
