OSLO, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Norwegian aluminium group Norsk Hydro will cut production of primary aluminium at its Neuss smelter in Germany by 30,000 tonnes, equal to 13 percent of the plant's annual capacity, by end-January, it said on Friday. The cut in the Neuss smelter's annual capacity to 200,000 tonnes comes in response to weakened aluminium markets due to the global economic crisis. "The planned production cut in Neuss is a direct consequence of the weak market situation and global downturn in metal demand," Hilde Merete Aasheim, head of Hydro's Aluminium Metal business area, said in a statement. At the Neuss smelter, 30,000 tonnes of annual capacity will be mothballed until further notice, the company said. (Reporting by John Acher)
