Indiana Aluminum Plant Catches Fire

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A fire an aluminum plant in Hammond this morning sent plumes of black smoke rolling over northwest Indiana. Hammond's chief fire inspector Jim Walsko says three aerial water trucks were fighting the blaze at the Jupiter Aluminum Corporation plant. The fire began at about 5:45 a-m Central Time. Walsko says there have been no injuries and a workers on duty at the time the fire began left the plant safely. Walsko says the fire may have started when an aluminum furnace used in making the company's products became overfilled. The plant makes extruded aluminum rod coils, plates, sheets and foil.
