The 1.575 million tpy Damanjodi alumina refinery and associated bauxite mines in India's eastern state of Orissa were hit by strike action on Tuesday.
More than 3,000 workers walked off the job to press demands that the refinery operator—state-owned Nalco—hire a family member of a worker who died in hospital on Monday. The death was not work-related.
The strike continued yesterday but there are conflicting reports as to whether it has been settled or is continuing today. Company officials have been negotiating with local union officials to find a compromise to the dispute.
