Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL) has assured the government of the eastern Indian state of Orissa that it will sort out the problems affecting supplies of coal to state-owned aluminium company NALCO. MCL's newly-appointed Chairman-cum-Managing Director Sriram Upadhaya told local media: "I have assured the government that the problem will be sorted out soon." Deliveries of coal to NALCO’s dedicated power plant dropped to 9,000t per day in August from the usual 14,500t per day, according to local media. It is unclear at this stage whether aluminium production at the 345,000tpy producer was affected. The most recent figures for July showed little impact, even though the coal supply issue was already in force during that month.
