India’s Nalco saved from potline closure

Indian aluminium producer Nalco is now receiving coal supplies again after a high court ruling ordering Mahanadi Coalfields to ensure supplies to prevent Nalco having to power down its 345,000tpy Angul smelter in the state of Orissa.

The company was last week running desperately short of coal due to a strike by drivers who transport the coal to its captive power plant. It had warned the court that it would take down one line at the smelter on Sunday if coal deliveries were not resumed.

It will now be able to avoid that scenario although production at the smelter is expected to remain under capacity until such time as its coal stocks have rebuilt to a level where it can regain full generating capacity at the power plant.
