Tokyo, Japan, Nov 15, 2006 - (JCN Newswire) - Showa Denko K.K. ('SDK; TSE: 4004) today held a ceremony at its Oita Complex to celebrate the completion of a new plant for producing aluminum cylinders for laser printers.
The new four-million-tubes-per-month plant has been under construction since February this year, costing approximately 2.5 billion. Due to the proprietary ED (extrusion and drawing) process, SDK's aluminum cylinders for laser printers meet stringent requirements for surface smoothness, roundness and straightness at micron-levels, ensuring high product quality and cost competitiveness.
Demand for laser printers is expected to increase at double-digit rates, especially for office use, because they provide such advantages as high printing speed and low running cost. In particular, demand for color laser printers, which require more aluminum cylinders than monochrome printers, is expected to grow substantially.
So far, SDK has produced aluminum cylinders for laser printers at three plants in Japan (Oyama and Otawara, in Tochigi Prefecture; and Hikone in Shiga Prefecture) and one plant each in the United States (Ohio) and China (Dalian), with a combined capacity of producing nine million tubes per month.
As a result of the completion of the new plant in Oita and subsequent upgrading of existing facilities, SDK will increase its cylinder production capacity, to a total of 15 million tubes per month, by the end of 2006.
SDK will focus on the development of high-performance and individualized aluminum fabricated products, investing in businesses with competitive advantages.
