TOKYO — Kobe Steel Ltd said Thursday it has developed a new aluminum alloy, which it claims is the world's strongest, for use in vehicles and fuel tanks for space shuttles.
The major steel maker, which is now applying for a patent, said the aluminum alloy has a tensile strength 10% higher than the aluminum-lithium alloy developed by Lockheed Martin Corp of the United States, currently the strongest. "By 2008, we're aiming to commercialize the new material for use in special purpose vehicles such as racing cars and aircraft and aerospace parts," Kobe Steel Senior Researcher Hideo Hata said in a statement.
