That was up from 157,085 tonnes in September, the Japan Aluminium Association data showed. Year-on-year declines have been narrowing from a near 40 percent drop earlier this year, as demand from the automobile and semiconductor industries picks up. Japanese demand for metals such as copper and aluminium plunged from late last year as the worst global economic downturn in decades hit consumer spending and forced manufacturers to cut output. Aluminium stocks held at three major Japanese ports inched up 0.8 percent to 171,200 tonnes at the end of October from the previous month, when they had fallen to the lowest in 14 years, trading house Marubeni Corp said. Demand has recovered but there is no major increase in sales and industry officials remain worried about the demand outlook for the metal. Still, Japan's aluminium buyers will likely face a further rise in premiums for the first quarter of 2010 as tight supply overcomes worries about a strong rebound in demand.
