Some 500 workers in Suriname's bauxite industry went into their strike action, demanding better wages and improved benefits. The workers from US-based Kier CCC, a contractor for the Suriname Aluminium Company (Suralco), launched a strike after spurning a proposal raised by the company. They are demanding a pay rise of at least $2.00 per hour. Workers staged a protest last Thursday and Friday in front of the Suralco alumina refinery in Paranam, noting they will continue industrial actions on Monday. The workers said they only received 60% of the monies being paid to their employers by Suralco. COPYRIGHT All rights reserved.
