Columbia Falls Aluminium may Face Capacity Cut

The Columbia Falls Aluminium smelter in Montana may be forced to close some of its operating capacity due to high power prices as it informed its employees. The 168,000tpy Glencore-owned smelter is running three out of five production lines, with two restarted early last year. The company said it was considering idling the two lines again because of growing raw material costs, high power prices and weak aluminum price. Glencore is still studying “the likely course of action and the determination of its scope and timing,” said Columbia Falls. Columbia Falls buys power from the open market while receiving a part-offset payment from the Bonneville Power Administration, its original power supplier. COPYRIGHT All rights reserved.
