Guinea mining unaffected by national go-slow

CONAKRY, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Operations at UC RUSAL's Friguia alumina refinery and CBG's bauxite mine in Guinea continued as normal on Wednesday despite a call for a national day of absenteentism. The go-low was to commemorate the one month anniversary of a bloody crackdown on protesters in Conakry. On Sept. 28, Guinean security forces slew more than 150 people in an attack on an opposition rally, an incident that Human Rights Watch said was planned in advance, and featured extreme sexual and ethnic violence. "This day is dedicated in particular to the women and girls whose physical and moral well-being was savagely attacked," said a statement from Forum for Living Forces, an umbrella opposition group. Most of the shops in Conakry were closed on Wednesday, and traffic in the West African country's capital city was lighter than normal. Though some female workers at mining operations across the world's biggest bauxite exporter stayed away from work, production was unaffected, sources at the firms said. Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee (CBG) produced 13.7 million tonnes of aluminium ore bauxite last year, making it the world's biggest single shipper. As well as Russia's UC RUSAL, which mines bauxite and refines it into intermediate product alumina, minerals firms Rio Tinto and AnglogoldAshanti have operations in Guinea. The international community has heavily criticised the regime of military junta leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara's National Council for Democracy and Development (CNDD) for the Sept. 28 killings. On Tuesday, the European Union said it would impose an arms embargo on Guinea, and restrict the travel and freeze the assets of individuals involved.
