Oman Observer reported that Sohar Aluminum received the award for achieving high level of Omanisation which currently stands at 70% of its workforce. The award was presented to Sohar Aluminum on October 19th 2011 at the 28th meeting of the Ministers of Labour and Social Affairs of the Gulf Cooperation Council held in Abu Dhabi. This honor for the organization is rare as it was among only two chosen from Oman to receive this distinction.
GCC Labour Organization for Labour and Social Affairs in the Arab Gulf Countries was set up in 1978 and had its first meeting in Manama. The objectives of this committee is to meet the challenges that emerge in all social issues, particularly labor which are closely linked to the direct development, human well being and prosperous nation building.
The 28th meeting for ministers of Labour and Social Affairs of the member states of the GCC was held with the key note to strengthen integration and cooperation among GCC member states to further enhance their ability to face emerging challenges posed by regional and international developments.
Sohar Aluminum was formed in September 2004 to undertake the first ever Greenfield aluminum smelter project in the Sultanate. Jointly owned by Oman Oil Company, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC TAQA and Rio Tinto Alcan, Sohar Aluminum reached full capacity of 375,000 tonnes per annum on February 19th 2009.
This is another milestone for SA in addition to earlier recognitions of Omanisation Excellence and wining His Majesty’s Cup for best Industries in 2010. The company’s target by 2015 is to be 85% Omanised. The development of its young employees is paramount and with that in mind, Sohar Aluminum has launched a training academy which will give each and every employee the opportunity for further learning.
