MOSCOW– The management of the Far Eastern Railways and the Norwegian company Hydro Aluminium have discussed plans to build an aluminium factory near the town of Komsomolsk-on-the-Amur in Khabarovsk Territory in Russia's Far East. The factory would come into operation during 2010-12 and would have a capacity of 800,000 tons of aluminium per annum and an operating life of at least 40 years. The total investment required is around USD4 billion.
Taking part in the meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the Far Eastern Railways, was senior management from the railway company and Tor Ellingsen, the head of Hydro Aluminium's Moscow office, Edgar Sadgen, Hydro's the vice-president for Human Resources, Safety and Environment.
The head engineer of Far Eastern Railways, Vladimir Krapivny gave a presentation on the company's capacity to transport the raw material and finished product between the port of Vanino and Komsomolsk-on-the-Amur and noted that it had developed the loading, transportation and unloading methods for alumina, the raw material required to produce aluminium. In 2006, over 700,000 tons of alumina were shipped from Vanino to Komsomolsk-on-the-Amur, with the figure expected to rise to around 1 million tons in 2007. Far Eastern Railways has extensive experience transporting aluminium, including the shipment of up to 500,000 tons per annum from Bagylnaya Station on the Eastern Siberia Railway to Vanino.
Far Eastern Railways can begin working immediately after the precise location of the factory and facilities for loading alumina have been decided and an investment agreement has been signed between Russian Railways and the Norwegian company.
