MOSCOW. June 25 - United Company RUSAL (UC RUSAL) has started to build the Taishet aluminum smelter in the Irkutsk region at a planned cost of $2 billion, the Russian aluminum giant said in a press release.
The first stage of the 750,000 tpy smelter, representing a quarter of projected capacity, should be commissioned in 2009 and the whole plant, including a baked anode factory, should be up and running during 2011.
UC RUSAL said in a June 25 press release that project investment would be $200 million in 2007.
"UC RUSAL's major aluminium assets are concentrated in Russia, and it is here that we see big potential for developing new plants. We have developed the 'smelter of the future' concept which complies with the world's strictest technological and environmental standards. The implementation of this project will allow the company to increase aluminium output by over 19% and will become an essential contribution to the development of the Russian economy," the press release quoted Alexander Bulygin, the UC RUSAL chief executive, as saying.
UC RUSAL said that by the end of the year, preliminary works at the construction site would be complete, and major construction and installation would begin. This will include laying the foundations for the reduction plant, casthouse and anode shops, construction of temporary and infrastructure buildings, and provision of power supply to the smelter site.
Bechtel Corporation performed a feasibility study of the smelter's construction with the assistance of specialists from UC RUSAL's Engineering & Construction Division. The Taishet smelter will comprise 4 potrooms equipped with state-of-the-art RA-400 cells developed by the UC RUSAL's Engineering & Technology Centre.
