MOSCOW, Jan 19 (PRIME-TASS) -- Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel is ready to renew its bid for a 25% stake in the company, which is controlled by aluminum giant UC RUSAL, a source close to Norilsk Nickel’s board of directors said Wednesday.

“Norilsk Nickel had offered U.S. $12 billion for the stake, but (CEO of RUSAL Oleg) Deripaska wanted $16 billion,” the source said, adding that the metals giant would not pay that much to avoid accumulating a large debt.

Norilsk Nickel’s initial offer expired on December 29, 2010.

Two other shareholders of RUSAL, Mikhail Prokhorov and Viktor Vekselberg, support the possible deal and are ready to continue negotiations, the source said.

The source added that Norilsk Nickel could make a renewed offer at any time, but this depended on whether there were any positive movements from RUSAL.

Norilsk Nickel is one of the world’s largest metals producers. It has production assets in Russia, Finland, Australia, Botswana, South Africa, and the U.S.

Besides RUSAL, Norilsk Nickel’s shareholders include Interros Group, with a 25% stake, and shareholders of Russian metals holding Metalloinvest, who hold up to 4% in Norilsk Nickel.
