The Anglesey aluminium smelter in Wales in the UK was operating at just one-third of capacity on Friday after a Thursday fire, according to US producer Kaiser, which holds a 49% stake in the plant. The majority stake is held by Rio Tinto Alcan.
A fire in one of the power transformers at the plant resulted in a total loss of power across the smelter, Kaiser said. Some capacity has been restored but the balance has been taken off line for safety and operational reasons and it is not yet clear how long it will take to restore production to normal levels, it added.
Anglesey last year produced 145,000t of metal.
