Leighton unit wins $136.5m Rio Tinto contract

Leighton Holdings unit, John Holland has won a $136.5 million ($US131.2 million) contract from global miner Rio Tinto Ltd. The contract includes the construction of five new alumina process areas, including installation of 10,000 metric tons of structural steel, 986 pieces of mechanical machinery, 100 kilometres of piping and 40 kilometers of thermal insulation, for Rio's alumina refinery in Queensland The work is due to start this month and is expected to finish in April 2010. John Holland group managing director, David Stewart said: “this new contract extends our longstanding relationship with Rio Tinto and reflects our position as a leading provider of innovative engineering services to the Australian resources sector.” General manager of John Holland’s Structural Mechanical Process division, Brendan Petersen, said: “This is a prominent and important project for our business and follows our involvement in the initial refinery expansion project in 2002."
