Miner Rio Tinto has released figures showing markets remained tough in the June quarter, particularly in aluminium. Rio says after production cutbacks in response to a sharp fall in demand, bauxite production was down 14 per cent, alumina fell 6 per cent and aluminium was down 5 per cent, compared with the same time last year. It says trading in the aluminium business continued to experience difficult conditions and showed only a slight improvement on the first quarter of this year. The company's global iron ore production was up 8 per cent compared with the same time last year. Rio Tinto shares closed 2 per cent higher at $50.08. source:www.abc.net.au
