Gladstone residents will have the opportunity to meet Olympic champion and Rio Tinto Ambassador, Libby Trickett, at Rio Tinto Alcan's 'Go for gold' Harbour Festival Street Parade on 1 April.

As a proud partner of the Australian Olympic Team, Rio Tinto has joined forces with some of Australia's best athletes to visit regional cities and remote mining communities to encourage locals to get behind our athletes at the London Olympic Games.

Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun general manager Mike Dunstan said that employees and their families are looking forward to Libby's visit.

"With just four months to go until the London Games, it is very special to have Libby take the time out from her training to come to Gladstone and take part in our street parade.

"I can't think of a better athlete to show our young people the importance of teamwork, respect, integrity and accountability. She is a fantastic role model and I have no doubt Libby will create some real excitement in the town," Mike said.

Mike also encouraged members of the community to take the opportunity to meet Libby and get her autograph at the Gladstone marina after the parade.

Still in high spirits from her career come-back swim at this week's Olympic trials, Libby said she was excited to be able to celebrate the milestone with Gladstone locals.

"Qualifying for London was such an amazing moment for me and I'm looking forward to celebrating it with Rio Tinto employees and members of the Gladstone community," Libby said.

Gladstone Festivals and Events manager Michelle Stafford said Libby Trickett's appearance at the Rio Tinto Harbour Festival Street Parade is a fantastic kick start to the 50th Harbour Festival.

"Having Libby Trickett come to town for the parade is a major drawcard for what will be another great festival," Michelle said.

Libby Trickett is one of three Rio Tinto Ambassadors who are travelling across Australia to share their sporting dreams with Rio Tinto employees and communities.

Rio Tinto's involvement is helping more than 400 Australian athletes realise their dreams and 'go for gold' at the London Olympic Games later this year. In addition to this Rio Tinto is the official provider of the metal being used to produce the 4,700 gold, silver and bronze medals for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
