By CHARLYN FINN - The third accident of 2007 occurred early Friday morning in the unit at Point Comfort Alcoa that makes aluminum floride. Two people with caustic burns received at 2 a.m. were transported for medical treatment, according to a spokesman for Calhoun County Emergency Medical Service.
James Sudik of EMS said one person was lifeflighted to the University of Texas Medical Branch John Sealy Burn Unit. The other person was transported to Citizens Medical Center at Victoria.
On June 16 seven people were treated after coming in contact with hydrogen fluoride gas at the unit. Two were lifeflighted and five transported to Citizens. All have been released.
Dirk Fillpot of Mine Safety & Health Administration, that is investigating last week’s incident, said the employees injured last week came in contact with hydrogen fluoride gas.
An Alcoa worker, John Dorton, 37, died at 9 p.m. Tuesday night, Jan. 4, 2007 in a Houston hospital after inhaling hydrogen fluoride gas at the Point Comfort Alcoa operations.
