North American aluminum demand in 2008 fell by 8.1% YoY

Platts reported that aluminum demand in the United States and Canada totaled an estimated 22.611 billion pound during 2008, down by 8.1% YoY. According to Aluminum Association, demand for semi fabricated products totaled 15.192 billion pounds, down by 7.4% YoY. Apparent consumption in domestic markets totaled an estimated 19.290 billion down by 9.8% YoY. Aluminum imports of ingot, scrap and mill products into the US and Canada totaled 297 million pounds in December 2009, up by 10.2% YoY. Exports of aluminum from the US and Canada totaled 7.485 billion pounds during 2008, up by 13.6% YoY while aluminum imports totaled 3.853 billion pounds, down by 15.4% YoY. Apparent demand for aluminum semi fabricated products in the US and Canada (measured in shipments by domestic producers plus imports) totaled an estimated 968 million pounds in December 2008, down by 13.4% YoY. Aluminum Association said that demand for aluminum sheet and plate totaled 632 million pounds in December, down by 7.9% YoY, while extruded products recorded a 26.8% YoY decline to 176 million pounds. Estimated shipments of aluminum ingot for castings, exports and other uses totaled 492 million pounds in December, down by 20.8% YoY while year to date, ingot shipments were off 9.6%. Apparent consumption in domestic US and Canada markets totaled 1.234 billion pounds in December, down by 15.5% YoY. Year to date, consumption was down by 9.8% YoY to 19,290 million pounds. Producer inventories totaled 2.681 billion pounds in December, down by 3.1% MoM from the November total of 2.768 billion pounds. The Aluminum Association, along with the Aluminium Association of Canada, reported that primary aluminum production in North America (US and Canada) decreased by 2.6% in January, dropping 145,173 tonnes from the previous month to an annual rate of 5,352,701 tonnes. Compared with a year ago, the annual rate of production was 508,954 tonnes, down by 8.7%, below the January 2008 rate of 5,861,655 tonnes. Actual production for the month of January totaled 454,613 tonnes. During 2008, primary production totaled 5,777,850 tonnes, up by 2.4% YoY. According to aluminum recycling statistics published by US Geological Survey, Department of Interior, US aluminum industry purchased an estimated 646 million pounds of aluminum scrap during December. This represents a decline of less than 1% from the previous month but 15.7% below December 2007. USGS estimates that aluminum and aluminum alloys recovery totaled 536 million pounds in December, down by 15.2% YoY. Meanwhile, Aluminum Association said that US exports of scrap, not included in the government's consumption statistics, totaled 158 million pounds during December 2008 down by 12% MoM as against 180 million pounds reported in November 2008. Exports of scrap totaled 4.314 billion pounds in 2008, up by 24% YoY, however, exports of scrap have fallen by 33.7% since July 2008. (Sourced from www.platts.com)
