Associated Press - February 21, 2009 5:44 PM ET DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - Alcoa Inc. is cutting fewer jobs than expected at its Davenport Works plant in the Quad Cities. The aluminum producer and the United Steelworkers Union Local 105 announced finalized plans on Friday, and fewer workers are affected. Alcoa originally announced it would be cutting 220 positions as part of a plan to cut 13% of its global workforce because of the deteriorating world economy. Layoffs will now affect 125 workers. Union President Skip McGill says another 72 workers have accepted a voluntary quit package, bringing the total number of employees to 197. The layoffs will take effect March 2. Employees accepting the quit package will be out by April 1. Alcoa also announced earlier that it was eliminating 41 salaried jobs at its Davenport Works plant. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press.
