Alcoa’s Italian Workers Protest Smelter Plan, Repubblica Says

Nov. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Alcoa Inc.’s workers at the Portovesme smelter are protesting a plan by the aluminium producer to temporarily idle output, daily la Repubblica reported, citing labor unions. About 700 employees occupied the factory last week and plan to hold a sit-in protest in front of the government’s office in Rome on Nov. 26, Repubblica said. On Nov. 19, New York-based Alcoa announced measures to suspend production at its Italian factories while appealing a European Commission ruling that reduced electricity tariffs at the plants didn’t comply with state-aid rules.
