Skana Aluminum Co. will receive a $650,000 grant from the state Department of Commerce to help redevelop the former Mirro cookware manufacturing site in Manitowoc, the agency announced Thursday.

Skana has begun aluminum rolling mill production that converts raw material into finished coil products, the agency said. The finished product will be sold to domestic and international end users and distributors for further manufacturing. The grant will be used for site clearance, building rehabilitation and environmental remediation.

The project is expected to create 110 jobs within five years and represents a total investment of $13.8 million, the agency said.

Last March, Sheboygan businessman Thomas Testwuide bought the assets of idled Koenig & Vits Inc. which acquired the Mirro factory in 2003. Testwuide, who once owned and ran the former Schreier Malting Co., is chairman and CEO of Skana Aluminum, which bid about $6.9 million to buy Koenig & Vits out of receivership.
