DJ China Aluminum Indus Faces Australia Anti-Dumping Risk-Report

BEIJING, May 04, 2009 (Dow Jones Commodities News via Comtex) -- Australian aluminum companies are planning anti-dumping measures against Chinese manufacturers of aluminum extrusion sections, a Chinese newspaper report said Monday. Citing an unnamed "Australian aluminum industry insider," the 21st Century Business Herald report said two Australian firms, Capral Ltd. (CAA.AU) and G. James Australia Pty. Ltd., were preparing antidumping lawsuits against the Chinese aluminum industry. The potential Australian action poses a major risk to the Chinese aluminum export industry, especially after the Chinese lost the Canadian aluminum extrusion market this year, the report said, quoting Wu Keyao, director of Kamkiu Aluminum Group, one of China's largest aluminum extrusion makers. Major Chinese aluminum extruders stopped exporting to Canada after Canada's imposition of antidumping duties on China-made aluminum extrusion products, the metals journal Platts Metals Week reported in late March. Wu attributed the trade tension to the higher efficiency of Chinese aluminum extrusion production, the report said. "Capral, G. James and other Australian companies supply about two-thirds of the Australian market, and Chinese companies supply the other third," Wu said. "But the Chinese market share has been growing because of better efficiencies." Australia consumes about 140,000-160,000 metric tons of aluminum extrusions annually, the report said. Wu said Chinese competition had resulted in Capral sustaining financial losses and leadership changes last year. "If Australia adopts antidumping measures, it will aid protectionist sentiment globally, which is not good for the development of China's aluminum industry," said Wen Xianjun, vice chairman of China's Nonferrous Metals Industry Association. source：www.marketwatch.com
