Alcan said it has a signed a new long-term supply contract with commercial aircraft builder Airbus which includes a “significant” increase in the price Airbus will pay for Alcan products.
Alcan will supply the Toulouse, Francebased company with a variety of high-performance aluminum products for its present and future aircraft programs, including the future wide-bodied A350 XWB, which is scheduled to enter into service with airlines in 2013.
The products include plate, sheet, stringers, small extrusions and tubes.
Financial terms weren’t disclosed. Jean- Philippe Cael, head of Alcan’s aerospace, transportation and industry division, said the contract involves a substantial increase in delivery volumes as Airbus ramps up production of its planes, especially the flagship double-decker A380, the world’s largest commercial aircraft.
Airbus is a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space.
Alcan, which is Airbus’s largest supplier of aluminum products, accounts for roughly half of the 200,000 metric tons of aluminum produced for the aerospace sector worldwide every year. The A380 alone will account for 40,000 tons, Cael said.
