Rio Tinto may close Iceland's ISAL aluminum smelter due to power supply problems

Tuesday, Jul 28, 2020

It was reported that Rio Tinto has filed a formal complaint to the Icelandic Competition Authority to accuse Landsvirkjun, a power supplier of Rio Tinto’s ISAL aluminum smelter in Iceland, of the abuse of its dominant position in the market.

In addition, Rio Tinto also asked the authority to investigate Landsvirkjun’s discriminatory pricing and long-duration power contracts and said that it might close its ISAL aluminum smelter unless Landsvirkjun adjusted the terms in the supply contract.
In February, Rio Tinto found that its ISAL aluminum smelter was unprofitable in the aluminum industry and started a strategic review on this aluminum smelter.
