Xstrata's Jamaican bauxite output up sharply, but alumina output constrained

The St Ann bauxite mining operations in Jamaica boosted production by 31% to 5 million tonnes last year, according to Xstrata, which owns a 50% stake in the business. The balance holding is owned by Century Aluminum.

However, production of alumina at the jointly-owned Gramercy alumina refinery in Louisiana was flat year on year at 1.179 million tonnes due to constraints on bauxite shipments caused by heavy rains. Xstrata didn't mention the power outage in November, which its partner Century said caused it a 10,500t loss of production (reflecting just its share of production).

The New Madrid smelter lifted its production to 253,600t in 2006 from 245,500t in 2005, while rolled products output rose to 215,100t from 199,900t.

New Madrid is investing $22m to lift capacity by 10,000tpy by 2011, Xstrata said. It didn't give a current capacity figure but our figures suggest it is 253,000tpy.
