ATHENS --International mining companies are starting to address the problems associated with accessing India's abundant bauxite reserves, Prasanna Panda vice president mining at Vedanta Alumina Ltd. told Dow Jones Newswires Wednesday.

Speaking on the sidelines of a conference in Athens, Greece, Panda said India's bauxite production is predicted to grow as new greenfield alumina refineries are built.

"Much of the bauxite reserves are located in areas that are difficult to access due to logistics, but mining companies are now ensuring that they have dealt with this issue prior to starting projects," he added.

Transport links have made the country's bauxite reserves - estimated to account for over 4% of the world's total reserves - inaccessible to mining companies.

Vedanta currently extracts bauxite, the ore used to produce alumina which in turn makes primary aluminum, from two open pits at its Balco operations in central India.
