The latest alumina tender by India’s National Aluminium, or Nalco, has gone for $423 a metric ton.

The next closest bid was $371/ton, and there were nine bidders in total, the market sources said. The tender is for 25,000 tons, with shipment at the end of May.

The last several tenders have gone for over $400/ton.

Alumina prices have been steadily rising since a January and February strike in Guinea aimed at toppling Lansana Conte, the country’s long-ruling president.

The strike saw production of bauxite, a key ingredient to make alumina, halted at Alcoa’s CBG operations, the country’s main producer. Alumina output at Russian Aluminum’s Friguia refinery was also cut by less than 10%.

Although production in Guinea has since resumed, traders said the alumina
market remains tight and participants are willing to pay higher numbers to receive prompt deliveries.
