May 12 (Bloomberg) -- National Aluminium Co., India’s second-biggest producer, is increasing bauxite production after reopening its mines last month, Chairman C.R. Pradhan said. Production of the key aluminum-making raw material is being increased to 15,000 metric tons a day from the current 10,000 tons, Pradhan said today in an interview. Mining was halted last month for nine days following clashes between security forces and Maoist guerillas that left 14 people dead. National Aluminium shares, which have risen almost a third this year, climbed as much as 2.8 percent in Mumbai today. It traded at 251.6 rupees, up 1.8 percent, at 10:42 a.m. local time. Aluminum is smelted from alumina, a semi-processed material made from bauxite ore. National Aluminium, or Nalco, makes 345,000 tons of aluminum and exports 64 percent of the 1.6 million tons of alumina it produces every year.
