Concerned denizens have come forward to stand by the Vedanta Limited, Jharsuguda, now reeling under a raw material crisis. In a letter to Nalco CMD Dr Tapan Kumar Chand and forwarding a copy of the letter to the State Chief Secretary, they have appealed to Dr Chand to allow the Vedanta Limited to join in Nalco’s open bidding process for 30,000 MT of metallurgical grade alumina.

A delegation of the locals, including the representatives from the Jharsuguda Bar Association, had met Dr Chand over the issue on January19. In their letter, they said the favour would help the Vedanta obtain alumina for its operation through fair trade and will create a mutually beneficial ecosystem wherein Nalco benefits from healthy competition at best market price and Vedanta gets an assured supply of quality alumina for its operations.
They cited that if Vedanta plant in Jharsuguda remains in hassle-free operation it will have a significant bearing on the lives of five lakh people residing in Jharsuguda and nearby areas, improving the economic and employment scenario in the region. Jharsuguda being an industrial town, an operation of Vedanta's magnitude is the backbone of socio-economic prosperity of Jharsuguda, much like Nalco, they said.
They told in the letter that “If large companies like Vedanta and Nalco can harness the natural resources abundantly available in the State and dedicate them for the socio-economic development of Odisha and its people, the State can emerge as a crown jewel contributing to the nation's growth.”
They added that at a time when the country is suffering from unemployment, slow growth and increasing fiscal deficit this will not only bolster the economic state of affairs in Odisha but together the two companies can boost the Indian aluminium industry and make Odisha the aluminium hub.
