Norway’s Norsk Hydro is working on a $30 billion-plus bid for Canada’s Alcan, rivaling a rejected bid from Alcoa, Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper reported on its website.

Citing unidentified investment bankers working with the two companies, the report said Norsk Hydro has begun work on a bid for the Montreal-based company.

“There are advantages to Norsk,” one banker close to Alcan was quoted as saying.“Obviously there are synergies there and there are certain similarities in terms of potential desires by governments. It has interesting potential.”

The report said other miners, including BHP Billiton are contemplating offers.

However, the report quoted unidentified financiers who have worked with BHP Billiton as saying the company may be constrained by the planned retirement of chief executive officer Chip Goodyear later this year.

“BHP’s board is going to struggle with the idea of letting the CEO do a transformational US$30-billion deal, then just walk out the door,” one investment banker who deals with BHP Billiton was quoted as saying.
