Sohar Aluminium puts 360th pot into operation

Sohar Aluminium has ramped up production to full capacity following the successful start up of the world’s longest single potline. As per report all 360 pots that operate using state of the art Aluminium Pechiney technology are now fully operational. Mr Bruce Hall Board of Directors and CEO of Sohar Aluminum’s were present to witness the starting of the final pot of the 360 pot series. Mr Ahmed al Wahaibi chairman of Sohar Aluminium said that “Sohar Aluminium serves as an example that Oman is ready for complex heavy industry and is on track to achieve His Majesty Sultan Qaboos’ vision for Oman in 2020.” Mr Bruce Hall said that “This is a significant milestone not only for Sohar Aluminium as a company but also for Oman as a growing industrial force in the world economy.” Following a revision of the start-up schedule in mid-2008, the project has been completed six weeks ahead of target and within the original project budget. Despite the world economic climate, Sohar Aluminium will be operating at full capacity and is on track to produce 350,000 tons of aluminium in the coming 12 months. By employing the latest technology in efficient power generation and metal production, Sohar Aluminium is able to produce high grade aluminium at a lower operating cost than many older competitors. AP35 technology utilises larger pots which exploit a higher current to produce a larger yield 2,700 kg per pot per day. As such, Sohar Aluminium’s operations haven’t been affected by the fluctuating world markets.
