UC RUSAL to build major energy and metals complex

Moscow -- United Company RUSAL plans to build an energy and metals complex in the Saratov region with a capacity to handle over 1m tonnes of aluminum, the company's press office reported today. The administration of the Saratov region and the Russian aluminum giant have signed a cooperation agreement to implement the project. The facilities include the second stage of Balakovo nuclear power plant with a capacity to generate 2000MW and the construction of the largest aluminum smelter in the world to produce 1.05m tonnes of aluminum per year. UC RUSAL is acting as the project investor, determining the cost of the project by means of a feasibility study which is projected to be completed by the end of 2008.
