China, Russia to Create Nonferrous Metals Territory

UC Rusal plans to invest in cathode block factory to double the capacity in Lingshan, Shanxi province. The factory’s annual capacity is 150,000 tons per year. And its offices in Beijing and Shanghai are seeking new chance to expand. China is the biggest aluminum producer and consumer in the world. Due to the close of many small-sized high-cost smelters, the aluminum output is decreasing. However, high power costs push the production costs high. It is expected China will be a net importer of aluminum in 2009. Chinese strong economic growth and demand for aluminum products create a vast cooperation future for China and Russia. UC Rusal’s surplus in aluminum and alumina capacity, nearing to ample hydro power of Siberia, and its high-competition technology makes Rusal become an important part of Chinese economic development. Rusal also plans to raise aluminum and alumina output to 6,000,000 tons and 17,000,000 tons per year to strengthen its leading position in the world.
