BHP Billiton reported its first quarter aluminum production at 3 18,000 tons this year, down from 338,000 tons in the previous quarter and 331,000 tons in the same quarter last year. The decline was due to power crisis in South Africa where its two smelters are. Production at the two smelters was down by 16,000 tons from the previous quarter in the quarter, while production at its Mozal smelter in Mozambique fell 5,000 tons in the quarter. Alumina production of BHP Billiton was 1.095 million tonnes in the first quarter, down from 1.157 million tones in the previous quarter, but up from 1.085 million tonnes in the year-earlier period.
