Bernama reported that a foreign investor has submitted a proposal to build an aluminum smelter complex in Sabah and is awaiting positive response from the state government. Mr Jhuvarri Majid CEO of Sabah Land Development Board said that documents for the MYR 10.24 billion project have been studied by the relevant government agencies. The written proposal was handed to Mr Datuk Seri Musa Aman CM of Sabah when he visited the Sabah Development Corridor pavilion at the 2nd Borneo International Trade Fair at the sports complex. Mr Jhuvarri said that the project vendors hoped to start construction of the complex, with an annual capacity of 620,000 tonnes per annum, by June 2010, provided all the approvals are obtained. He said that "The investors have been engaged in negotiations with SLDB over the last 6 months and are confident Sabah can become a major player in aluminum production in Southeast Asia." Mr Jhuvarri said that the smelter will be a huge shot in the arm for the SDC launched 2 years ago. We have a foreign investor who will be investing billions of Ringgit in a single project that will bring numerous benefits to the state and country. (Sourced form Bernama.com)
