EDITORIAL: Aluminum has signature spot in economy

Nov. 14--The last year has seen a lot of talk about Kentucky's signature industry, but little agreement on just which industry that might be. The ongoing push for expanded gambling is being mounted as a means to save Kentucky's signature horse industry, which gambling proponents argue needs the revenue boost from slot parlors to compete with other states. During debates about increasing Kentucky's alcohol tax earlier this year, members of the state's signature bourbon industry ceremonially poured bottles of the amber liquor on the steps of the state Capitol in protest of a proposed hike. And last week, the University of Kentucky hosted a public forum about the controversies surrounding coal, which is touted by many as Kentucky's signature industry. The state should consider adding another signature industry to its list -- aluminum. At least that's the argument of the newly formed Kentucky Aluminum Network, and it's a good one. The aluminum industry has a prominent place in the economy of this region and this state, and a more concerted effort by that industry could bring it more recognition. For now, the Kentucky Aluminum Network is composed of just a few groups -- the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corp. and Northwest Kentucky Forward, an economic alliance of Henderson, McLean, Union and Webster counties, have joined with local aluminum producers. But the hope is to take the network statewide. And the numbers support the contention that aluminum has developed a statewide presence in Kentucky. There are 120 aluminum-related facilities in 53 cities with close to 15,000 employees in Kentucky. Much of that activity is in this region, with the 800 workers of Gibbs Die Casting in Henderson and two of the 14 active aluminum smelters in the country located in Henderson and Hancock counties. The Owensboro Riverport as a licensed warehouse serves as a central delivery point for aluminum traded on various exchanges. The network will do more than just generate more attention in Frankfort. The plan is to bring producers together with customers and suppliers, and collaborate on the challenges the industry faces, said Mike Baker, the economic development director for Hancock County. Its location, low utility costs, its proximity to automotive plants and the Ohio River have all contributed to making Kentucky such a player in the aluminum industry. This concerted effort to bring together the members of this signature industry and promote its importance to Kentucky's economy will help ensure that's the case for years to come.
