Bhubaneswar, April 4 -- Vedanta Alumina Ltd signed a new deal with the Orissa government Wednesday to set up an alumina refinery, two captive power plants and a smelter plant in the state, officials said.
Sterlite Industries (India), which is a part of the Vedanta Resources and managed by London-based Anil Agrawal, had signed a deal with the state government in June 2003 to set up a one million tonne alumina refinery and a 100 MW captive power plant at Lanjigarh in the western district of Kalahandi.
Subsequently, it formed Vedanta Alumina as its subsidiary to execute the project. This is the reason why a fresh deal with the new company was necessary, a top official of the state industry department told IANS.
The deal was signed by secretary of the state's industry department Priyabrata Patnaik and project director of the company's smelter plant project M. Siddiqi in the presence of Industry Minister Biswabhushan Harichandan and few top officials of the company and the state government.
Apart from the alumina refinery and the power plant, the deal includes setting up of a smelter plant of 250,000 tonne capacity and a power plant of 675 MW at Bhurkhamunda in Jharsuguda district with an aggregate investment of approximately Rs.84 billion, Harichandan said.
'The project will provide direct employment opportunities to about 1,500 people and indirect employment to more than 7,500,' he added.
The state will also earn tax revenue of Rs.6 billion per annum, Harichandan said, adding 'it will also boost downstream and ancillary industries.'
